Payton withdraws application

Mike Payton, president of New Boston Village Council has withdrawn his application to be an appointed member of the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Board of DD).

Earlier this week, Scioto County Commissioners Mike Crabtree and Doug Coleman reaffirmed Payton’s appointment to the Board of DD.

Board of DD Superintendent Julie Monroe, expressed concerns over the appointment and sought the advice of state officials.

On Thursday, Crabtree said, “On numerous occasions, we’ve been advised by the prosecutor’s office that the appointment was okay. Unfortunately, the AG’s (Attorney General) office, the state DD Department and the County Commissioners Association is in disagreement with that (prosecutor).”

Friday morning, Payton said he would be withdrawing his application to be appointed to the Board of DD.

“Through a series of events we have discovered that there is some potential conflict with the appointment in regard to the Ohio Revised Code. Myself as well as the county commissioners and everyone else involved is desirous of following the current Ohio Revised Code to the letter as we should,” Payton said. “Because of this discovery I am withdrawing my application and will continue to be very supportive of the local MRDD (Board of DD) program as myself and my family have always been. If after legal examination is complete of those articles in the ORC and it is found that an elected official can serve on the MRDD (Board of DD) board I will look at reapplying.”

Monroe said, upon hearing the news of Payton’s intentions, “I was glad to hear a final decision had been made. My intent all along was to look out for the best interest of the Scioto County Board of DD programs.”

Crabtree said the commissioners will be looking elsewhere for the vacant seat.

“We will readvertise to see if anybody is interested,” Crabtree said.
