PORSTMOUTH, Ohio – Professor Lisa Wade to present at Shawnee State University as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series at 7 p.m., Oct. 27, in the Sodexo West Ballroom in the University Center.
Dr. Wade will present her lecture titled, “Sex, Rapture and Resistance on College Campuses: What College Students Really Think about Hooking Up.” Her lecture explores how the media both celebrates and condemns “hook up culture” and depicts it as a mythical environment in which college students have an endless string of casual sexual partners. When in fact, students are having less sex than the stories in the media suggests. Her lecture will argue that the problem isn’t too much sex, but instead it’s bad, unpleasurable, unwanted, unempowering and antagonistic sex. Dr. Wade proposes that the solution is not to abandon the casual hookup (since she believes there are interesting advantages), but multiply the sexual discourse in ways that give students the cognitive freedom and cultural support to make good sexual choices that are best for each of them.
Dr. Wade is a professor of Sociology at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. She is the author of numerous academic articles on hook up culture, the social significance of the body, and other topics. Dr. Wade runs Sociological Images, the most successful sociology site on the web, which has attracted millions of visitors including professional and amateur sociologists alike.
Admission is free to the public.
Dr. Wade’s lecture is presented as part of the 2015-16 Jane M.G. Foster Distinguished Lecture Series and is sponsored by the SSU Development Foundation.
