Shawnee Lodge reopens for families, guests

Shawnee Lodge officially reopen its’ doors to the public for overnight stays Friday, June 5 after a near three-month shutdown.

WEST PORTSMOUTH — Upon re-opening to guests beginning June 5, Shawnee Lodge has seen a pent-up demand from their guests who are excited to once again visit the amenities of Shawnee State Park.

Robin McIntire, general manager of Shawnee Lodge, said that as much as prospective guests have shown their interest with back-to-back sold-out weekends, she and her team have been just as excited to reopen their facilities and interact with familiar faces who choose their location for a getaway.

“We’re over the moon,” McIntire said. “We opened everything last Friday and it was a sold-out weekend, and we have another sold-out weekend coming up this weekend. The phone’s been ringing off the hook. We got to call all of our employees back to work, everyone’s just so happy to see guests.”

As announced Wednesday morning, Shawnee Lodge will be offering a $25 credit for guests to put toward certain amenities during their stay. Guests who book stays Sunday-Thursday until Aug. 27, 2020, will be given the credit to use at the Smokehouse Restaurant and Lounge, Shawnee Lodge gift shop, or for package add-ons such as the date night add-on, snack night add-on or happy birthday add-on. Guests have until June 15 to book their stay and qualify for the mentioned credit.

Being that the business model for hotels is one of the most intimate for guest-customer relations, McIntire acknowledged some of the steps that the staff at Shawnee Lodge have undertaken to ensure guest safety as cases of coronavirus have taken a sharp decrease in Ohio and the surrounding area.

“At check-in, We have a Plexiglas barrier at the front desk. Our whole staff and everyone in the building is wearing masks, we’ve got sanitizing stations throughout the building, six-f0ot social distancing signs hung up throughout the building,” McIntire said. “We have a limited capacity at both our outdoor and indoor pools. In our guest rooms, we’ve removed any high-touch items like pen or paper, we have packages of sanitizing wipes we give to everyone at check-in.”

McIntire also said that the room-cleaning will be removing all items from each room for a thorough disinfecting to ensure a clean space for guests.

Shawnee Lodge re-opened their cabins May 15 after receiving guidance from the state of Ohio in regards to safety measures that would need to be taken. As an employee of Shawnee Lodge for 30 years, McIntire and her staff can now focus on continuing their business through the rest of the year after a certainly unprecedented few months.

“It was definitely a struggle,” McIntire said. “I’ve been there for 30 years and this was the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that. Our management team stayed on and continued taking reservations, and we were fortunate enough that we were able to open the cabins back up the 15th of May.”
