Since 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol Program has been instrumental in helping students get to and from school safely. As the program marks its 95th anniversary, Patrollers across North America and in 30 countries will take their post for another school year, wearing their familiar ‘Lectric Lime belt or vest.
“Being a safety patrol in middle school helped me to develop skills that are still helpful to me now as I enter my college career,” Lindsay Capper, former School Safety Patrol member explains. “I learned how to be a leader, be responsible, and have integrity. I was given the opportunity to have daily responsibilities and demonstrate a positive role to my fellow classmates. I know that students who are active safety patrols today will reap the same benefits as I did,” she adds.
AAA School Safety Patrols are school-sponsored student volunteers from upper elementary, middle and junior high schools. Patrollers direct children, not traffic. As school-age leaders in traffic safety, Patrol members teach other students about traffic safety on a peer-to-peer basis.
AAA School Safety Patrol members:
• Complete training in the fundamentals of traffic safety and Patroller duties
• Protect fellow students from the hazards of crossing roads and highways on their way to and from school
• Protect students in parent pick-up/drop-off areas and bus loops by keeping children away from lines of traffic
• Assist bus drivers, school officials and students in the bus unloading and loading zone
• Teach fellow students about traffic safety
• Serve other leadership functions under the direction of school officials
AAA School Safety Patrol plays an important role in helping young pedestrians learn and fulfill responsibilities regarding traffic safety. Millions of U.S. boys and girls have honorably served their classmates since the AAA School Safety Patrol program began, and interest in the program has spread around the world. At least 30 other countries, including New Zealand, the Netherlands, England, Germany and France, have emulated the program. AAA commends school personnel who administer the AAA School Safety Patrol program and law.
In addition to the safety aspect, this vital program has helped instill countless students with a sense of leadership, responsibility and citizenship. AAA provides an array of equipment and materials, including electric-lime fluorescent belts, badges, hats, ponchos, flags and training for the AAA School Safety Patrollers. When properly uniformed and trained, they can assist their grade school classmates by ensuring their safety to and from school every day.
AAA East Central is host to over 2000 School Safety Patrollers dedicated to the safety of children going to and from school. The program has been praised by safety and education groups around the globe for reducing injuries and deaths among 5-to-14-year olds, the age group most at risk for pedestrian injury.
School Safety Patrol Members take pride in protecting others. Over the years, 12 AAA School Safety Patroller’s have received the prestigious AAA National Lifesaving Awards for saving the life of a fellow student while on duty.
At the end of the school year all School Safety Patrol members are recognized for their dedication toward preserving lives and preventing injuries.
