Second Presbyterian Church, located at 8th & Waller Streets in Portsmouth, will launch a creative new non-profit after-school program named Kids Beats on September 14. Focusing on music and the arts, the Kids Beats classes will be open to all children in grades 1 – 6 in a ten-week session scheduled on Mondays from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. The program will run through November 16.
Designed by Dr. Stanley Workman, Second Presbyterian’s Director of Music, kids will receive fun, but structured instruction in classes which will include choir/singing, drama, piano, handbells, chimes, percussion ensemble and drumming, along with stories and crafts. Students will participate in three classes each week.
A snack will be served when children arrive, followed by a welcome, announcements and a brief message before classes start at 4 p.m. Dismissal time is at 5:30 p.m. and parents must come in and sign-out their children. Transportation to and from the program must be provided.
Cost of the Kids Beats program is $25 per child or a maximum of $50 for two or more siblings. Scholarships are available on request. Registration will be limited to 40 students.
To register, checks made payable to Second Presbyterian Church with “Kids Beats” in the memo line may be sent to the church at 801 Waller Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662.
“Kids Beats (Bringing Education & Arts to Second Pres) is a place for children to explore and develop their talents and creativity in a supportive and cooperative environment – a fun, safe, respectful community in which children can learn and play,” said Dr. Workman. “In a time when many school programs are making cuts in the arts, Kids Beats will prove that the arts are important in the lives of children.”
Plans are in progress for second ten-week session in the spring.
