Shawnee State University to offer Veterinary Assistant Training Program

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Shawnee State University will be offering a Veterinary Assistant Training Program starting October 12, 2015.

The program will be presented in two parts, each consisting of eight weeks of classes. The program instructors are Dr. Gail Counts, Founder and Co-owner of Shawnee Animal Clinic, and Tim Wells, Registered Veterinarian Technician and Co-owner of Shawnee Animal Clinic.

Part One will start October 12 and end December 7. Students will be taught the essential skills to care for animals and assist veterinarians in the office. Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at SSU.

Students must successfully pass Part One to continue to the second part of the program.

Part Two will begin January 4 and end February 29. Part Two of the program will require off-site labs held every Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Shawnee Animal Clinic. Regular classes will be held on campus every Monday night from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The Veterinary Assistant Training Program is intended to help individuals gain knowledge, basic skills and abilities necessary to perform in a veterinary office, animal shelter, pet store or kennel. This program is a non-college credit professional development training program designed to give individuals a professional edge when it comes to hiring and job placement.

The program is $1,200 for both parts. Students are required to purchase two textbooks and two first aid books for cats and dogs (not included in the price of the program) available at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at SSU.

Early registration is encouraged since registration is limited. The deadline to register for the program is October 5.
