SSU to provide a Crisis Text Line service for students

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – At the beginning of the 2015 fall semester, Shawnee State University will be implementing a new program called Crisis Text Line for its students.

The Crisis Text Line service is a program that allows students to anonymously text with a trained crisis clinical counselor 24/7 while supplementing additional resources available, such as calling a crisis hotline (1-800-243-TALK) and/or presenting to SSU’s on campus counseling department for services.

Students can text the word “Shawnee” to 741741 and will be automatically connected to a trained crisis counselor.

“The Crisis Text Line program is a great resource enabling students to reach for help when struggling emotionally and having a difficult time focusing on their studies. This program will allow students who may not feel comfortable calling a hotline or coming in to the office an additional option to still receive the help they are needing,” said Jessica Priode, Clinical Counselor at SSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services.

Counseling and Psychological Services is located on the second floor in the University Center. Counseling services include one-on-one counseling and group counseling. Services are available for free for students who are enrolled at SSU for at least one credit hour.
