* The Fred Spencer Band will be sharing their gifts of music and song this Sunday, August 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Nauvoo United Methodist Church in West Portsmouth, OH. The band plays a variety of Christian music, but is best known for Blue Grass Gospel. The band includes guitar, banjo, mandolin, and upright bass.
Fred (David) Spencer is a native of West Portsmouth, Ohio, and the son of Fred and Carol Spencer, Sr. Fred Jr. grew up playing and listening to Bluegrass Gospel and Country Music and was greatly influenced by the musical talents of his father as well as his uncle, the late Roy Lee Centers, who sang for Ralph Stanley.
While attending Portsmouth West High School, Fred began playing the drums. This led to the formation of the gospel band, Altar of Prayer, which included two of his high school friends from 1987-89. From 1989-2001 Fred joined his mother, father, and cousin, Lennie Centers, to form The Fred Spencer Bluegrass Gospel Band. The band lasted until the death of Fred Jr’s father, but they amassed an eleven year career of touring gospel and bluegrass venues, playing alongside longtime friends, The Isaacs.
Since then, Fred Jr. has amassed an impressive track record of playing with some of the most talented and well known Country Music artists. He has toured with the legendary Jack Greene from the Grand Ole Opry, as well as the Dalton Gang and Stella Parton. While touring with Parton, Fred sang duets with her at WSM’s Midnight Jamboree and eventually became Stella’s band leader. In May 2015 Fred was awarded his own recording contract by VECA RECORDS. His plans now are to move to Nashville and go into full-time music ministry. More information can be found at www.fredspencer.net.
