The park’s free Outdoor Adventure Weekend will take place from Friday, Sept. 1 through Sunday, Sept. 3. The three-days of outdoor activities will include paddling, tree climbing, shooting, archery, primitive fire-starting, a wild edible walk, beginning backpacking campfires and more.
Activities will take place at the Nature Center and at the CCC Cabin. Activities at the Nature Center will include a meet and greet at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 1; tree climbing, paddling and shooting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2; and art with nature at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3. Those activities at the CCC Cabin include backpacking at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2; the wild edible walk starting on Saturday at noon; and primitive fire starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Nature Center is open during regular hours from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Adventure Weekend is a joint effort from Shawnee State Park Naturalist Jenny Richards and Scioto County Soil and Water Conservation District.
“We are supporting partners for this event but much of the planning this round was Jenny Richards,” Kate Sowards, Conservation Education Coordinator with Soil and Water commented.
Shawnee State Park and nature enthusiasts such as Richards and Sowards work to help others see all of the advantages to being out in nature while also encouraging a passion for the environment.
“This is a great opportunity to get outside with your family and try some new activities,” Sowards stated. “Not only will we have wonderful adventures planned but we have what you need, the instructors on hand to help, and it is all FREE!”
Sowards added that Labor Day weekend will be an ideal time to visit the park. Campsites are still available and can be reserved by calling 1-866-644-6727.
