River Days candidate, Leslie Gallion, Miss Green 2017 will be hosting a C.A.R.E. (Community, Action, Reach Out & Educate) Day at the Green High School gymnasium, 4057 Gallia Pike in Franklin Furnace, Jul. 5 beginning at noon.
Gallion’s platform – Bridging the Gap, Poverty Education and Awareness, focuses on how communities can help those in need.
“I see a lot of this (poverty) in my school particularly and in the Scioto County area. I’m a teachers aide in one of our elementary classes and we have a lot of kids that come in hungry and sometimes school lunch might be the only meal they have. It’s summer time now and you never know what kids are going without food and for how long,” said Gallion.
During her community service event, anyone can come in and receive a hot meal. There will be games, inflatables and prizes for children.
“We’re also going to have a build-your-own care package station,” Gallion explained. “Both adults and children can come in and take whatever items are needed. We’re going to have clothing and toiletry items as well as food items. Everything is free, there’s no charge for anything.”
Outside of River Days, Gallion is heavily involved in church activities through her youth group at Sand Hill Christian Baptist Church and is also the president of Green’s Bible Club. She is also involved in athletics, running both cross country and track as well as playing basketball.
Gallion says she is honored to represent her school in the River Days competition.
“I signed up for River Days and I was hopeful that I would be selected. I was actually sick the day they announced who was selected,” said Gallion. “I had the flu whenever they made the announcement and I got a call from my little sister and she said ‘they announced that you won Miss Green!’ And I was really excited and went into the school the next day. I always looked up to the contestants and wanted to be a part of this. I really love the experience that I’ve been through so far.”
