Students advance to national competition

Mya Williams and Shannon Hamilton, both medical office management students from Scioto County Career Technical Center will be advancing in the Business Professionals of American national competition in Orlando, Fla.

Two local students will be going to Orlando, Fla., where they will compete in a national leadership contest. Mya Williams and Shannon Hamilton, both medical office management students from Scioto County Career Technical Center (SCCTC) will be attending the Business Professionals of America (BPA) 2017 National Leadership Conference, “Spread Your Wings,” in Orlando, Fla., from May 10-14, 2017.

Williams and Hamilton will join over 6,000 other conference delegates from across the nation to participate in national level business skills competitions, workshops, general sessions, and national officer candidate campaigns and elections. Besides having the opportunity to excel, they’ll experience the city of Orlando.

“The conference will be the culmination of a school year’s worth of business education and training which members of the local chapter of BPA at SCCTC have received,” Chapter Adviser, Tracy Stewart, who teaches Medical Office Management at SCCTC stated.

The regional competition was held at SCCTC and Rio Grande University in January. SCCTC students competed in over 20 events with 22 students from the Medical Office Management Program and the Information Technology Program advancing to the State Competition which was held in March.

“There’s several areas the kids can compete in,” Stewart explained.

All students competing were not medical office management students. Mark Coriell, Information technology teacher, explained that his students also competed in everything from web design, programming, graphics and presentation. 30 SCCTC students advanced to the regionals, and nine advanced to the state level.

BPA is a national organization for high school, college, and middle school students preparing for careers in business, finance and management information systems. The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school.

BPA acts as a cohesive agent in the nationwide networking of education and business and industry. The mission of Business Professionals of America is to contribute to the preparation of global professionals through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.
