PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – As part of the 2016-17 Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association/Shawnee State University season, the group SHUFFLE will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tues., Dec. 13 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
SHUFFLE performances employ a novel format. Upon arrival, every audience member is given a numbered menu with songs from a variety of genres including Baroque, Broadway, Pop, Jazz and Christmas music. If the number on the attendee’s menu is called, they will choose what the musicians will perform next.
With the selection of music constantly changing depending on the audience, no concert is the same. Even the musicians and performers don’t know which selection will come next.
A preview of the concert’s selection of music can be found on the VRCFA’s website, www.VRCFA.com.
This format was inspired, quite accidentally, by the founder, Eliran Avni, when his iPod was on shuffle and he was on the elliptical machine listening to the Pretenders and immediately followed by Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony. Avni realized that both the audience and musicians would learn something new about the music they listen to.
“When you’ve got Regina Spektor back-to-back with a Shubert piece, something happens to the Spektor piece as well as the Shubert piece,” said Avni.
SHUFFLE’s members are an accomplished group of musicians composed of graduates from Julliard, New England Conservatory, Oberlin, Manhattan School of Music and Bard College.
Tickets are $25 for the general public, $24 for seniors, $17 for SSU students and $15 for children under the age of 12. Upper tier tickets are available at a discounted price. There is also special pricing for families and large groups.
Tickets and additional information are available at the McKinley Box Office at 740.351.3600 or online at VRCFA.com.
The performance of SHUFFLE is sponsored by the Scioto Foundation.
The 2016-17 SOPAA/SSU season is presented with the support of the Ohio Arts Council, an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Shawnee State University Development Foundation, City of Portsmouth, OH, the Martings Foundation and the Scioto Foundation.
