There are miles to go and events to attend before the annual American Red Cross Dancing With Our Stars event on March 19 at the Friends Center in Portsmouth. Between now and then there will be a series of individual fund raisers. One of the events is Oct. 18 as dancer Kevin Hoops stages – “Let’s Go Back To Prom,” with a Roaring 20s theme, with all proceeds going to assist the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross
“We’ve got a deejay Katrina’s Karaoke and Deejay Service, coming and great food and dancing and we’re going to be doing some pictures,” Hoops said. “It’s going to be at the SOMC Friends Center. Single tickets are $35, couples $50, and it includes their dinner. We’ve got a photo booth and I’m going to have a really cool background set up. We’re going to be offering photographs, a really nice package of pictures.”
Hoops said, since it is a 20s themed event, some will be dressing up while others will be in just a shirt and tie.
‘A lot of people have bought really neat dresses that go back to the 20s and some people are just wearing black little dresses,” Hoops said.
On Oct. 23 Batman and his Batmobile will be coming to Party Pros in Wheelersburg from 5-7 p.m.
“We’re going to be doing wristbands,” Hoops said. “A $20 wristband includes 12 inflatables, a go-cart ride, two slices of pizza and pop for the kids, and then we’ve got pictures with Batman.”
Hoops said a 5 X 7 photo and four wallet size photos will be available for $10 or an 8 X 10 and eight wallet size photos for $20.
“If they want to do the VIP donation, it’s $20. They get to get inside the Batmobile and he autographs an 11 X 17 poster for them and gives it to them that day,” Hoops said.
Hoops and Sarah Martin will team up to try to capture the honors at Dancing With Our Stars.
“We’ve got Kickoff coming up,” Debbie Smith, Executive Director of the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross said. “The Kickoff is going to be on Friday, Nov. 4 5-7 p.m., so we have tickets on sale already for that. The Kickoff is going to be a lot of fun too. This year we’re getting ready to celebrate our 100 years, so we’re doing what we call ‘Dancing Through the Decades,’ where people can dress in their favorite 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s attire. They don’t have to dress up but it will be a lot of fun and I expect to see some really fun costumes.”
A prize of two tickets to the main event (Dancing With Our Stars) will be awarded to the costume winner. That event will also be at the SOMC Friends Center. It will feature hors d’oeuvres, entertainment and a cash bar. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Red Cross office or from any of the dancers.
Sponsorships are still available for the main event and information is available at the Red Cross office or through any dancer. Tickets are mostly likely to become available in December.
