Merritt Family Scholarship at Scioto Foundation

The Scioto Foundation has announced the creation of The Merritt Family Scholarship Fund established by long-time Lucasville residents to benefit a Valley High School graduating senior each year.

“On behalf of the Merritt family, please know how pleased we are to let the Lucasville School community know that we will be awarding a scholarship to a graduate of Valley High School who wants to pursue a degree in education,” said family spokesperson Jan Merritt Osborne . “This is to honor our family members who are teachers or have been educators in the past.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a graduating senior at Valley High School in Scioto County, Ohio. Preference will be given to applicants majoring in education. Applicants must have an accumulated grade point average on a 3.0/4.0 scale. Students must show evidence of community service and participation in church. The scholarship is renewable based upon maintenance of an accumulated GPS of 3.0 and a major in education.

The Acorn scholarship fund has been set up to honor their parents and siblings by the Merritts because “the whole family is big on education,” said Laquita Merritt Adams. “All of the seven children graduated from high school and some went on to college.”

Contributions to the Merritt Family Scholarship Fund from family, friends or the general public may be made at any time. Donations may be in the form of gifts of cash, securities or property.

Establishing an Acorn Fund such as the Merritt Scholarship is a simple and efficient way to build an endowment over time through installments, according to Patty Tennant, Program Director – Donor Services at the Scioto Foundation.

An Acorn Fund can be used to create an unrestricted, designated, scholarship, organizational endowment, donor-advised or field of interest fund.
