Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio has long been the site for making great memories among the county’s 4-H members. The camp is owned and operated by the 4-H programs in nine counties across the region, including Adams, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike, Scioto, and Vinton. The camp’s Board of Directors strives to keep the cost of participating in camp low, to maximize the number of youth able to attend, but in so doing, maintenance of the camp’s facilities has suffered. At present, four buildings at camp, including the main lodge, are badly in need of new roofs. With that need in mind, the Board launched a Raise the Roof Capital Campaign this summer, with the goal of raising $80,000 to completely replace the roofs on all four structures.
To kick-off the campaign, Farm Credit Mid-America (FCMA) has pledged up to $40,000 in matching funds, challenging businesses, county 4-H programs, alumni, and friends to raise an additional $40,000 for the campaign by September 30, 2016. Many of Farm Credit’s employees are 4-H alumni, advisors, and parents of current 4-H members, and they understand the value of the 4-H camping experience. Camp is unparalleled for helping youth develop life skills, including decision making and problem solving, working as member of a team, communicating effectively with others, and leadership skills. The grant fits within Farm Credit’s focus area of “Developing Future Leaders in Agriculture.” In announcing the grant of matching funds, FCMA management noted that Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp hosts nearly 1,000 youth from across the region each summer. Canter’s Cave is also home to the State 4-H Special Needs Camp and to the Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Program.
Donations and pledges to meet the Farm Credit challenge are already coming in from all the counties that camp at Canter’s Cave. In addition, letters soliciting support for the campaign are being mailed to businesses and 4-H clubs and alumni throughout the area.
