The Roy Rogers Festival rides again

Western stars look-alikes pose for a photo at last year’s Roy Rogers Festival

If the song – “Happy Trails to You,” is familiar to you, you will most likely want to mark your calendar for Aug. 3-6 because that’s the date of the 33rd Roy Rogers Festival to be held at the Holiday Inn on Second Street in Portsmouth.

The weekend will kick off Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 9 a.m. for the Roy Rogers Character Awards Breakfast, hosted by Tim Throckmorton and Monty Lobb. The stars of the Roy Rogers Festival will be in attendance and awards will be presented by Dodie Rogers Patton and Monty Lobb. you can RSVP by calling 740-727-4444 or 740-259-1195.

After that, the event will be in full swing.

“It’s shaping up very well,” Garnet Davis, secretary of the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Collectors Association, said. “We’ve got everything pretty well in line. Now it’s just kind of the finishing touches on everything.”

Davis said several stars have committed to the event, including Darby Hinton who played Israel on the Daniel Boone Show; Dan Haggerty’s manager Terry Boman who will bring a book written by he and Haggerty; Don Collier of the TV show High Chaparral; Steve Connors, son of Chuck Connors of The Rifleman series; Romanian pro boxer Razvan Cojanu; Roy Rogers’ daughter Dodie Rogers Patterson and her husband, Jon Patterson.

Saturday afternoon is very special as folks gather to watch the big shootout. Dogwood Pass, a western reenactment group will perform across the street from the Holiday Inn. Saturday night is the grand banquet and tickets will be available. There will also be an auction with all proceeds to the Roy Rogers Scholarship Fund.

“The stars flights are all scheduled so it’s ending up pretty good,” Davis said.

Davis said the group will have hospitality with the stars each night with food and entertainment.

“Tickets will be available at the door,” Davis said. “They can get them at the door. We send out all the information that’s requested and if anybody has any questions they can call. They can get tickets in advance, but it’s really not necessary. Everything will be available at the door.”
