The Portsmouth Area Jaycees are a non-profit corporation civic group that performs services for the local community. Additionally, the purpose of this organization is to foster growth, and development of young people so as to develop in the individual a spirit of genuine Americanism and civic interest, and as a supplement educational institution to provide them with the opportunity for personal development and achievement. Originally chartered in February 1939, we have been part of the community since that date. Current and past Portsmouth Jaycee’s include: United States Congressman, Judges, Attorneys, Doctors, Accountants, Funeral Directors, Bank Presidents, Ministers, Small Business Owners, Realtors, Insurance Agents, Printers, Auto Dealership Owners, Pharmacists, and Radio Personalities.

The Jaycee Organization builds leadership through running projects and internal competitions. The Portsmouth Jaycees are currently competing in the Springboard, Speak Up, and Blue Chip competitions. These are all competitions within the local chapter and with other Jaycee organizations.

The Jaycee’s are known for running projects and helping the local community. Some local notable Jaycee projects include the starting of River Days, Trout Derby, building the shelter house at the Kinney Spring, and building the flower beds in Tracy Park. These are just a few of the many charitable and civically minded projects handled by the Portsmouth Jaycee’s.

Current projects include Trout Derby, Easter Egg Hunt, TOSRV Luggage Haul, Christmas Parade and Christmas Baskets. Fundraisers for these project include: telemarketing, bake sales, yard sales, Haunted House, Bloody Valentine Haunted House, and grant writing.

This year’s Executive Board consists of President Lori Cooper, External VP Kenny Scarberry, Internal VP Jon Hackworth, Secretary Amanda Fitch, Treasurer Leroy Hackworth, and Public Relations Director Curtis DePuy.
