Today I had an experience that reminded me how special and honest the people of Scioto county can be. I lost my gold Gucci watch while shopping in Walmart. Although it was almost 20 yrs old, the monetary value is probably still costly. Since it was an engagement gift from my fiancee, the love of my life, who had a massive heart attack and died before our wedding date, the sentimental loss was so much greater than the monetary one for me and how rewarding it is to again be made aware of the strong values possessed by Sciotonians. When I phoned Wal-mart and described my watch in detail, Stephanie (the rep at the service desk) said “Yes, I have it right here”, I was almost reduced to tears. When I retieved my watch, I thanked Stephanie who told me it was turned in by a customer, so I hope that customer will pick up the newspaper and read how thankful I am for the return of the watch and how much that watch meant to me. I think about the recent election when politicians emphasized over and over that economy and money is what most Americans list as their number 1 priority. This experience tells me that values like caring for our fellow human beings, honesty, and integrity are the priorities of those in Scioto county. For the person who turned in my watch, I am so thankful that you realized that sometimes sentimental value of a found object and the value you receive by returning that object will give you a lasting satisfaction not only for you as the returner but for the person who lost that article. Of course, I hope Wal-mart appreciates Stephanie for her honesty and integrity who could have easily denied the watch had been found. Thank you and God bless you and yours during this most sacred of all Holiday Seasons.
