Local Scioto County area residents are feeling better about managing their health issues after completing a six-week evidenced-based healthy living workshop sponsored locally by the Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. (AAA7) that was recently held at Hurth Apartments in Portsmouth.

The workshop, entitled “Healthy U,” is a program made possible by a joint effort of the Administration on Aging, the National Council on Aging, the Ohio Department of Aging, the Ohio Department of Health, and the AAA7. Healthy U is based from the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, which serves as a model for this initiative. The Program emphasizes the patients’ role in managing their illness and building their self-confidence so they can be successful in adopting healthy behaviors. Instructors for the recent program at Hurth Apartments included Vicki Woyan, of the AAA7 who is a Master Trainer of the Healthy U Program, and Kim White, Volunteer Coach for the Healthy U Program.

Graduates of the Healthy U program gained needed support, in addition to a number of other benefits including:

· Learning practical ways to deal with pain, fatigue and depression

· Discovering ways to be more physically active

· Learning how to eat healthier

· Learning better ways to talk with physicians and family about health issues

· Setting personal goals

· Finding ways to relax and deal with stress

The class held at Hurth Apartments marks the first healthy living activity being made available for residents through a small grant received from the Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing. The grant offers programs that provide residents with access to educational materials related to health and wellness. The Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. secured the grant to help address the county health outcomes ranking for Scioto County, which ranked 87 out of the 88 counties in Ohio.
