Abby Wright of Boy Scout Crew 2 received her Venturing Silver Award at a Court of Honor held at Sacred Mission Church in Wheelersburg. In order to receive the award she became proficient in emergency preparedness (including standard first aid, CPR, and Safe Swim Defense), participated in Ethics in Action, completed the Venturing Leadership Skills Course, earned the Venturing Gold and earned at least one of the five Venturing Bronze awards. Abby’s Father, Dave Wright is the Adult Advisor for Venturing Crew 2 in Portsmouth.

Venturing is one of three programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America. A youth development program for young men and women who are 14 years of age or 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age, it has become one of the fastest growing programs in the BSA. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

There are continued misconceptions about what Venturing is all about. Venturing is not for young boys and girls but rather for young adults. Venturing provides the skills needed for young adults to make ethical choices, experience a fun program full of adventure and challenges, acquire leadership skills, and to take advantage of opportunities to advance their skills and knowledge in the areas of high adventure, sports, arts, hobbies, religious life, and Sea Scouting.

The program of every Venturing crew revolves around a special avocation or hobby interest. What a Venturing crew does is limited only by the imagination and involvement of the adult and youth leaders and members of the crew. Young adults have the opportunity to develop their own program that both meets their interests and their busy schedules.

“There are several Venturing Crews in the Portsmouth area, but we are always looking for new sponsors and adult advisors,” said Matthew Seifert, District Executive.

Young adults, parents or organizations may contact the local Simon Kenton Council Service Center at 740 -354-2811 for further information on the program.
