Shawnee State University faculty nominated several students for this year’s Trustee award. The SSU Board of Trustees has established a Trustees’ Award as part of the Shawnee State University Celebration of Scholarship. The award goes to an outstanding student, based on research that is investigative, project-based, inquiry-based, open-minded and/or exploratory.
The 2013 winners of the Trustee Award are Elijah Gerlach and Brandon Mays who presented “Protein Profiling of Bordetella Bronchiseptica to Identify Attachment Capabilities,” with faculty mentor Natural Science Professor Eugene Burns, Ph.D.
The students receive up to $1,000 toward expenses to attend the National Conference for Undergraduate Research or other discipline-specific or professional conference.
“As trustees, we are extremely proud of the students who participate and present their work — and the faculty mentors who help make it all possible,” Board Chair Dan Mooney said. “We wanted to develop a way to further recognize these outstanding students by making it possible for them to continue their conference experience.”
The students nominated by faculty members as Trustee Award participants besides Gerlach and Mays were Mary Kincaid who presented “War Photography: Truth or Fiction,” with faculty mentor Professor Neil Carpathios, Ph.D.; Allison Dunn, who presented “Multiculturalism in Literacy Books” with faculty mentor Sandra Cox; and Janelle Pisegna who presented “Occupational Hazards and the Development of Cancer” with faculty mentor Rhoni Maxwell-Rader.
