Piketon, Ohio – Fluor-B&W Portsmouth led a campaign that raised $85,778 during a month-long effort for United Way and local charities in September 2012 at the Department of Energy Portsmouth Site in Piketon. The fundraising activities shattered the $50,000 goal set by the employee campaign committee, as the company’s 2,000 employees, along with personnel from across the site, gave to support the area’s less fortunate residents.

Throughout the month employees were asked to complete pledge forms and were invited to participate in various fundraisers including cookouts, bake sales, silent auctions, a dinner/talent show and a grand finale cookout and pie-in-the-face competition. Employees could “vote” with their wallets to see to see their favorite manager/supervisor take a pie in the face, all in good fun, in front of dozens of co-workers during the final cookout.

“United Way makes change possible by amplifying the power of you, the donor,” said Mary Ann Miars-Peercy, Executive Director United Way of Scioto & Adams Counties. “What we cannot do alone, we must do together. That allows us to be part of something bigger and something greater. Because of the generous support of Fluor-B&W employees, they are helping to build a stronger community and improving people’s lives.”

Funds collected from plant activities and corporate matching donations from Fluor Government Group will be divided equally among the United Way offices of Ross and Scioto counties and the community funds of Pike and Jackson counties. Additionally, many employees pledged payroll deductions to specific United Way and community charities within the region.

“The tremendous support from all of Fluor B&W, in United Way pledges, donations and many successful fund-raising events, reflects the commitment of the companies and employees to helping improve lives and strengthen our community,” said Mary M. Elsass, Executive Director of United Way of Ross County. “ We are truly grateful for this outstanding generosity.”

“We are extremely fortunate to have employees who so readily give back to our community,” said Fluor-B&W Program Manager Dennis Carr. “The energy and generosity displayed by our workers and our United Way Committee was contagious. This past month brought us all together while bringing relief to those in our community who need it most.”

In addition to providing financial support to United Way agencies in the four-county area, employees of the campaign’s participating organizations (DOE, USEC and Fluor-B&W) also give their time by participating with many organizations that have a direct impact on the quality of life in southern Ohio.
