Officials with the Southern Ohio War Memorial Foundation signed a lease agreement on Tuesday with the Scioto County Commissioners for the necessary land for the memorial just north of Lucasville.

According to material from the foundation, the purpose of the memorial is to honor all fallen heroes from World War One, World War Two, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War throughout eight southern Ohio counties.

Those counties include Scioto, Adams, Fayette, Highland, Lawrence, Jackson, Pike, and Ross Counties.

The memorial will be located two miles north of Lucasville. On a one-acre plot of land was selected on U.S. 23, near Fairground Road in Lucasville. It was owned by the Scioto County Commissioners, and they agreed to allow the foundation use of the land for its War Memorial.

“We started this project a year and a half ago,” said Evan Elliott, Southern Ohio War Memorial Foundation Chairman said. “We now have the necessary property and we have scheduled a groundbreaking for the memorial on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. We’ve invited county commissioners from eight different counties to attend.”

The cost of the memorial is expected to be raised through fundraisers and private donations.

For more information or for ways to donate call Elliot at 740-464-1749.
