Dean Lobdell has joined Fluor-B&W Portsmouth LLC. as director of Waste Management, Project Director Dennis Carr announced.

Lobdell will oversee the handling and disposition of material generated from the anticipated decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of Cold War-era facilities and systems at the Department of Energy Portsmouth Site in Piketon.

Lobdell and the Fluor-B&W Waste Management team will move forward in the coming year with shipping process gas equipment off-site for safe disposal, Carr said. The equipment comes from part of the former uranium enrichment cascade, a complex network of machines and piping that enriched uranium for more than 60 years.

“In addition to this effort, Waste Management will continue to move forward with reducing our legacy waste inventory and ramp up our uranium barter program to 600 metric tons per quarter,” Carr said. Through uranium barter, Fluor-B&W prepares material for global uranium markets, with proceeds funding a portion of the cleanup activities at the DOE Site.

Lobdell has more than 21 years of senior project management experience in waste operations at DOE’s Rocky Flats, Idaho Cleanup Project and East Tennessee Technology Park sites. He is experienced in the full life cycle of low-level waste and mixed low-level waste management, including program development, packaging, transportation, disposal and regulatory compliance.

Lobdell filled the position vacated by Danny Nichols, who was recently named president and project manager of B&W’s Idaho Treatment Group LLC. He is a U.S. Navy veteran and earned degrees in aeronautical engineering from Arizona State University and systems management from University of Southern California.

Fluor-B&W is the contractor overseeing the D&D of older facilities at the Piketon Site.

“As DOE’s D&D contractor, Fluor-B&W’s mission is to safely clean up the site for our community’s future,” Carr said. “We welcome Dean to the Fluor-B&W team as we continue with the project.”
