On Thursday, April 11, the annual “Visually Literate” High School Art Exhibition will open at the Southern Ohio Museum. 140 entries were submitted for judging to become part of the exhibition. There are 7 categories including: black & white drawing, color drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, utilitarian three dimensional work, and photography, graphic arts and digital media.

The judge for the show was Professor Lane Raiser, who teaches art at Shawnee State University. The exhibition will include a total of 50 works of art from the following school districts: Clay, East, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Portsmouth, South Webster, Valley, West and Wheelersburg.

The exhibit will be on display April 11 through May 9 in the upstairs galleries of the Southern Ohio Museum. There will be an Opening Reception for the student artists at the Museum on Thursday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m., with the Awards Ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m. As part of the Awards Ceremony, Mr. Raiser will share his thoughts about the artwork and the exhibit. Students who participated in the Memory Project will also be recognized at the Awards Ceremony. There will be live music provided by local musician, Jack Vetter and light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and open to the public.

This event is coordinated by the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center and the Southern Ohio Museum and is sponsored by: General Electric Peebles Test Operations, Gary and Marilyn Hairston, Richard D. Marting Foundation, Portsmouth Area Arts Council, Portsmouth Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Scioto Foundation, Shawnee Animal Clinic and SOMC.
