Clay Works, an all ceramic and sculpture show opened in Shawnee State Universities Appleton Gallery this week. The show is an exhibit featuring area artists and their ceramic and sculptures work.

“This exhibit features 12-15 artists from different levels of ceramic and sculpture backgrounds. Experience ranges from under graduate school to graduate school and post grad school. A lot of these people are professional artists in their own right. Several of the artists are instructors here at Shawnee State,” said Todd Reynolds, gallery spokesman. “All of the artists in the show have ties to the tri-state.”

Reynolds said an all ceramic and sculpture show is unique to the Appleton Gallery.

“We tried to gather as many people that worked in ceramics and sculptures as we could for the show,” Reynolds said. “We’ve had ceramic shows in the past with a few sculptures.”

SSU Ceramics instructor Mike Bowen, helped to gather area artists to participate in the show.

“We have some exchange students from Taiwan that have pieces in the show,” Bowen said.

He said this show is unique because of the high level of craftsmanship that went into each of the pieces.

“A lot of people think of ceramics in the more traditional functional cups, bowls and tea pots. We tried to include a lot of different things in this show, a lot of things people might not get to see if they went to other galleries.”

According to Reynolds the show will be in the Appleton Gallery through Feb. 28. The gallery hours are from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday with various other hours.

The Appleton Gallery is located on the second floor of the Vern Riffe Center For the Arts on the Campus of Shawnee State University.
