What a year it has been! And it all started with a name change…

The United Way formerly known as the United Way of Scioto County has expanded services to Adams County, hence the newly named, United Way of Scioto and Adams Counties. Adams County is a rural community that is in need of the programs and services that United Way can provide to them. With this inclusion of a new county, services to Scioto County have not ceased nor diminished. All monies raised for each county remains to the designated county that the donor has selected.

2-1-1 is coming

Scioto County will soon be able to dial 2-1-1 to receive helpful information.

2-1-1 is a free number to call for information such as: I can’t pay my mortgage, how can I prevent foreclosure? How do I find out about boil orders? Where can I volunteer with senior citizens? Where do I register to vote? And hundreds of other questions can be directed to the appropriate place by a simple call to 211. This service will connect people with resources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round.

Rockin’ Readers

Reading has been brought to a whole new level. One day a month the Impact Team from the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities along with United Way visit the Carousel Center Preschool to read a story. The fun doesn’t stop there. After the story is read, music is played and students are encouraged to jump, clap and dance around. While the students are engaged and having fun they are learning the language and the literacy skills that they need to be ready for when entering school.

Community Care Day-School Supply Drive

The United Way, along with the partnerships of the Scioto Foundation, SOMC and Bihl’s Office Supply, have been committed in a yearly Community Care Day Event. This event is held once a year and it allows the United Way to give back to the community that supports them throughout the year. The yearly project is a School Supply Drive for underprivileged students. Scioto County schools within the public school system make an application to receive school supplies based on need verified by the free and reduced lunch program. Monetary donations as well as donations of new school supplies are donated to the United Way by individuals and companies to be distributed to area schools. 5,100 students received assistance with school supplies in 2012.

The United Way is a non-profit community based organization with a governing board of volunteers whose goal is to meet the needs of residents in Scioto County. The United Way is known for conducting an annual campaign drive that raises money and allocates those monies to approved participating United Way 501 (C) 3 member agencies so they can carry out their mission in order to have a positive impact on the community.

The United Way continues to focus on mobilizing the caring power of communities and making a difference in people’s lives.
