The Scioto County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization, which was founded in 1976 and remains active in 2013 with over 100 members. The society’s purpose is to collect and preserve historical records of Scioto County and to make available for use in genealogical research. An ongoing project has been to locate and document cemeteries of Scioto County. Our last update was “Gravestone Inscriptions of Scioto County, Ohio Vol. 6, Bloom Township” and our next projects will include Vernon and Rush Townships. We are always looking for volunteers to help transcribe tombstone information. Anyone with knowledge of any cemetery in Scioto County is urged to contribute the information to the society.

Highlights of programs in the past year included speakers:

Joan Smith “Identifying and Preserving Photo’s for 1840-1900”; Jill McDonald President of 7Nation Celtic Club of Portsmouth, Ohio gave an Irish Tea and John Hogan “Celtic Heritage in Southern Ohio; Chip Horr “Portsmouth Civil War Unit 1st Ohio Light Artillery Battery L”; Carolyn Cottrell Portsmouth Public library Local History Department “The Ologies” Marriage of Technology and Genealogy”, Lori Shafer “Organizing Your Records “from Briggs Lawrence County Public library.

SCCOGS Members represented the Society in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Portsmouth and 2012 Greenup County Genealogy Conference at Greenup, Ky., 1940 Census project, 27th Annual Ohio Genealogical Society Chapter Management Seminar in Ross County, and the Eastern Kentucky Genealogy Conference at Paintsville, Ky.

Officers for 2013 include: President, Phyllis Crawford; Vice President, Jodi Wright; Treasurer, Gladys Reynolds; Recording Secretary, Patricia Lacy; Corresponding Secretary, Janice Edwards. Committee chairs include: Evelyn Baker and Patricia Lacy co-chairs of Publications; Newsletter Editor/Webmaster, Joyce Sadler; Janice Edwards, Cemetery chair; Gladys Reynolds, Research; Belinda Bowman-Schaefer, Librarian; Mary Elizabeth Flanagan, Historian/Scrapbook.

Publications of past years which are still for sale include: The 1884 History of the Lower Scioto Valley, reprinted in 2007, a Scioto County 1850 Census Index for every township, Early Settlers of Scioto County, and other cemetery updates and obituary volumes. The official newsletter of the society SCCOGS NEWS is published bimonthly and available on the website for members and non-members to view as well as many other information aide for beginner genealogist such as” Inscriptions of Greenlawn Cemetery”, “Nile Township Cemetery Inscriptions” “Enlisted Men of 1918”, upcoming Genealogy Conferences for 2013, brief histories of the townships of Scioto county, research helps and forms and Families Histories “Pioneer of Scioto County, Ohio”. All can be viewed at our website at www.sccogs.com .

The Chapter holdings of genealogical records, books, donated Family Histories and other research materials are housed in the Local History Department of the Portsmouth Public Library. The chapter also now maintains an office in the Masonic Temple Building for storage of older genealogy records. Members take research requests for non-resident members as time permits.

Community members and guests are always invited to attend the bimonthly meetings on the second Saturday of the month beginning in February.
