DOE Public Meeting Oct. 22

The U.S. Department of Energy invites area community members to a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22 at Waverly High School, 1 Tiger Drive, Waverly. The event is a quarterly update on the environmental cleanup of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant .

“Attendees will be welcomed for a brief overview in the high school auditorium, presented by a DOE representative, and will be able to talk one-on-one with site leadership and subject matter experts on a variety of activities related to the site,” said Karen Price of Fluor-B&W Portsmouth, the DOE contractor for decontamination and decommissioning (D&D).

Information stations about projects and activities will be open in the cafeteria adjacent to the auditorium, with engineers, scientists and other experts on hand to talk about the work.

Among topics to be covered are progress on D&D efforts, soil and groundwater cleanup, the historical preservation and virtual museum project, and waste disposal alternatives, Price said.

Also featured will be the regulatory decision process, acquisition and employment, and planning under way to make the site attractive to potential future users after cleanup is complete, Price said.

“This is the fourth public meeting hosted by the DOE to provide updates in this manner and the feedback has been positive,” Price said. “Our meetings provide a way to keep stakeholders informed as work progresses, and gives those interested a chance to speak face to face with experts and site leadership in areas of their interest, whether that is cleanup work, the decisions that have to be made, or other activities.”

For more information about the event, contact Price at Karen.price@fbports.com, ext. 2276, or Jack Williams of Fluor-B&W Public Affairs at jack.williams@fbports.com, ext. 2964.
