This program is based upon new research into this exciting chapter of local Civil War history. The raid of some 2,000 Confederate soldiers in the summer of 1863 brought the war to the home front in Brown, Adams, Pike, Scioto, and Jackson counties. The presentation will examine both the raiders' path and that of the Federal forces who were in hot pursuit. Particular attention will be paid to the important role Portsmouth played in the Union's efforts to catch the raiders before they could cross the Ohio River. Additionally, the talk will briefly examine the life of William Flagg of Buckhorn Ridge, a Scioto County writer who published a popular short story about the raid in the early 1870s. And, wait, there is more. The multi-media presentation will provide the public with a sneak peak into the development of Scioto Historical, the new smartphone app for touring, documenting, and studying the history of our region. The mapping and documenting of Morgan's Raid related historical sites will be included in one of the app's original guided tours, which is set for an early 2013 release. Research into Morgan's Raid and the larger Scioto Historical app project has been made possible through the generous support of the Scioto Foundation and the Shawnee State University Development Foundation.
