The Scioto Foundation reminds area students that the deadline for 2014 scholarship applications from students throughout Scioto County and southern Ohio is 5 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2014. Scholarships ranging from $250 to $7,500 will be awarded this year through the Foundation application process.
Scioto Foundation scholarship application forms for 2014 are now available at the SF office, located at 303 Chillicothe Street in Portsmouth, Ohio. All completed applications must be mailed to the Foundation office at P.O. Box 911, 303 Chillicothe Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662, or delivered to the SF office before 5 p.m. on April 2.
When selecting scholarship awards, the SF Scholarship Committee considers several factors including financial need, academic achievement and leadership potential, as well as school and community involvement. Students wishing to renew previous scholarships must reapply each year through the specified application process.
SF scholarship application guidelines require students to turn in nine copies of the complete application, a current transcript of college grades and/or high school grades, one letter of reference from the applicant’s school faculty, one letter of reference from a member of the community, one high school graduation photo or recent photo and a paragraph biography.
The SF Scholarship Committee, chaired by Phyllis Fried, selects approximately half of the recipients of awards given through the 113 scholarship funds currently managed by the Scioto Foundation. Other scholarship winners are chosen by external committees established by fund donors. In 2013 the Scioto Foundation allotted $318,000 for scholarships and awarded
around 285 internal and external scholarships. The designated scholarship amount for the 2014/2015 school year will be somewhere in the range of $350,000, according to Scioto Foundation Executive Director Kim Cutlip.
