The Potter’s House Ministries in Sciotoville is an IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site. Because of the designation the staff can prepare and file federal and state tax forms for free.

The Potter’s House Ministries can also help you complete your taxes through a program of the Ohio Benefit Bank.

“We can electronic file (e-file) for free and the return is usually direct deposited in seven to ten days,” said Anita Casper, director of Potter’s House Ministry.

Casper said Potter’s House Ministries has been offering tax preparation services for the last six years.

In 2013, Potter’s House Ministries served 793 residents of Scioto County and surrounding areas. This year, they hope to expand services to offer the free services to 850 residents.

“This is a way we can give back to our community. It saves the tax payers money and puts money back into our community,” Casper said.

She said there are certain income requirements to be eligible for the program.

“One program its the maximum income is $58,000 and for the Ohio Benefit Bank program the maximum income married people can make up to $95,000 and a single can be up to $65,000,” Casper said.

She said to be able to offer these services to the community Potter’s House Ministries counselors are trained through the IRS VITA program.

“All of our counselors are (trained) at the advanced levels, so everyone is on the same page in the building,” Casper said.

Casper said since starting filling out returns on Jan. 21 they have completed 120 returns, which is up from previous years.

“We accept walk-ins or new this year we have a drop-off service. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go through an interview process and drop off paperwork,” Casper said.

She said once the interview process is complete and the return is finished the Potter’s House counselor will call the person to let them know their return is finished and can be picked up.

She said those interested in taking advantage can call Potter’s House Ministries at 740-776-4004 or 776-6929. Potter’s House Ministries is located at 518 Sycamore Street in Sciotoville.
