Alumni events scheduled for SSU Homecoming weekend
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Shawnee State University Homecoming weekend is set for Saturday, Feb. 1 with several events scheduled throughout the weekend.
Kicking things off on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. is the annual Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, in the Sodexo Ballroom in the University Center.
The event will honor the four newest members of the Shawnee State Hall of Fame: Rebecca Day (volleyball), Lisa Davies (women’s cross country), Star Emmert (women’s cross country), and Bill Rockwell (Home Team Award). Several events are scheduled for the day of Homecoming. First, the Homecoming Carnival will be held in the University Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. Various crafts, games, and other activities will be hosted by SSU student organizations to build school spirit before the afternoon’s games.
The SSU Bears Women’s Basketball team will square off against the Georgetown College Tigers at 2 p.m. and the men’s game begins at 4 p.m. in the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center, with the Homecoming Coronation taking place between games.
Additionally, during halftime of the men’s game, the $10,000 Homecoming Shootout will be held, sponsored by the Mark A. Harner Insurance Agency.
Following the game, comedian Joe Zimmerman will take the stage at the Eloise C. Smith Theater in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. Praised for an accessible style pairing absurdism with a wide-eyed, “aw-shucks” demeanor, Zimmerman has appeared on “John Oliver’s NY Stand Up Show,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” and “Nickelodeon’s Nickmom Night Out.”
The Homecoming Dance will be held in the University Center from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. for Shawnee State students. Finally, the annual Alumni Mixer will be held at the Port City Pub and Café at 9 p.m. This year, Alumni Relations spotlights the classes of ‘74, ‘79, ‘84, ‘89, ‘94, ‘99, ‘04, ‘09 back to campus.
