Elsie & Harry Knighton Memorial Scholarship Applications Available
In 1999, the Shawnee Nature Club established a scholarship at the Scioto Foundation in memory of their club’s founder, Mr. Harry S. Knighton. The Elsie & Harry S. Knighton Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a full scholarship for a sixth grade student or students from Scioto County to attend a four-day natural science camp at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve in Adams County.
For more than 40 years, the Nature Conservancy and the Cincinnati Museum Center have been preserving this extraordinary area in Ohio through stewardship, scientific inquiry, and education. To learn more about the preserve, visit the website of the Cincinnati Museum detailing the living collections at http://www.cincymuseum.org/nature/sciencecamp.
“It’s an educational partnership that, over time and with consistent quality, actually advances science,” explains Lucy Miller of the Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. “Classes explore the preserve and participate in an interactive approach to the scientific method, discuss current issues in conservation, and more. Teens and preteens will spend three days exploring rugged unglaciated landscapes while studying a myriad of threatened and endangered plant and animal species. “Activities tend to flow with current scientific interests on the preserve,” notes Miller. “In this way kids can really get an idea of what scientists do in the field.”
Applications can be obtained at the Scioto Foundation office located at 303 Chillicothe Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662. The deadline to receive applications is Friday, February 28, 2014.
