PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — In the spring of 2012, the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) asked Shawnee State University to consider offering master’s degree programs accessible to high school teachers giving them the opportunity to earn credentials to offer dual enrollment courses.

Shawnee State University anticipates starting the master’s program in mathematics this summer pending approval from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

There is a high demand for the program as evidenced from a survey of 48 high schools across nine counties in southern Ohio.

“The purpose of this degree is to provide working professionals, especially high school teachers with an accessible degree program that will afford them the opportunity to work towards a graduate degree in mathematics while continuing the responsibilities associated with their current employment,” said Professor Krista Maxson, Ph.D., chair of the SSU Mathematics Department and interim associate provost for Research and Graduate Programs.

With the support of a $60,000 grant, the SSU Department of Mathematical Sciences offers three graduate courses.

The master’s program provides its students with the advanced content knowledge appropriate for those wanting to teach the first two years of college level mathematics.

The program also teaches innovative teaching methods such as the flipped classroom approach and introduces them to rigorous research methods in mathematics education to work towards improved teaching methods.

Ten students completed six, three-credit hour graduate mathematics courses for a total of 18 hours over the past two summers.

The curriculum includes 36 hours of study courses in mathematics, statistics and education research. The program is not designed for those who are seeking state licensure to teach mathematics in grades 7-12.

The new program will admit a cohort serving 10 to 12 students each summer with up to 36 students enrolled in the summer terms.
