Nelsonville, OH – In observance of National Public Lands Day, Forest Supervisor Anne Carey announces that the Wayne National Forest will offer a fee waiver on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28, 2013. The fee waiver includes all recreation sites and trails.

Recreation sites include campgrounds, picnic shelters, and swim areas. Sites will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis and will not be reservable through the National Recreation Reservation System (NRRS).

One of the favorite attractions on the Forest is the over 360 miles of trails, which include horse, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), off-highway motorcycle (OHM), mountain bike, and hiking trails. Trail permits are required to ride ATV, OHM, mountain bike, and horse trails during the open season (April 15 through December 15).

The 241,000 acre Wayne National Forest offers a variety of recreation opportunities, including camping, picnicking, fishing, hunting, nature viewing, canoeing, and much more. The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Forest Service lands contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the nation’s clean water supply, a value estimated at $27 billion per year.
