POINT PLEASANT — Mason County’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year will be chosen at tonight’s Law Enforcement Appreciation Banquet, held by the Point Pleasant Rotary Club.
The special dinner, which is free to all law enforcement personnel and their families, starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Point Pleasant Moose Lodge. The banquet not only will honor the officer of the year but all local law enforcement personnel for their dedication, hard work and sacrifices made to protect and serve the communities of Mason County.
In addition to honoring officers, the keynote speaker for the event will be Cabell County Sheriff and President of the West Virginia Sheriff’s Association, Thomas McComas. Emceeing the event will be Mason County Commission President Rick Handley.
All law enforcement departments had the opportunity to nominate one of more law enforcement officers from either their own department or another department within Mason County for “Officer of the Year.” The chief or department head coordinated the nomination process for the “Officer of the Year” and provided the necessary forms to make recommendations. The “Officer of the Year” will receive a plaque as well as $500.
In addition, each nominee will be recognized at the Appreciation Banquet. Qualifications for nomination included recognition of an exceptional act, achievements and/or meritorious service that exceeded the normal expectations of job performance including, but not limited to, acts of personal heroism, crime prevention, detective work, community relations, juvenile programs, traffic safety, and/or innovative approaches to public service.
West Virginia has lost several law enforcement officers in the recent past that remind everyone of the dangers and risk that law enforcement officers face each day. By coordinating the banquet, the Point Pleasant Rotary Club wants to better educate the general public and citizens of the risk and the dedication that each officer puts forth each day in performing their job.
Again, the dinner is free to law enforcement members and their families. Additional tickets can be purchased from any Rotary member at $25 each or $45 per couple. Call Larry Jones at Point Financial at 304-675-1300 or Sharon Stapleton at Peoples Bank at 304-675-4480 for information.
