On Tuesday morning the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce held it’s annual awards banquet. During the banquet Sheri Anderson was awarded the chambers member of the year award and Linda Tieman was awarded the chambers distinguished citizen of the year award.


Before Luanne Valentine, Vice-President of the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce announced Anderson was announced as chamber member of the year some of the reasons she received the award were given.


“This years chamber member of the year has been instrumental with the success of the Southern Ohio Safety Council. The safety is a program managed by the chamber in conjunction with the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation, Division of Safety and Hygiene. It is designed to keep Ohio workers safe through education,” Valentine said. “Safety council members are eligible for rebates, saving companies thousands of dollars.”


Valentine said Anderson has gone above and beyond her responsibilities as


co-chair of the council.


After receiving the award Anderson expressed gratitude for the honor.


Before Valentine announced Tieman was announced as chamber distinguished citizen of the year some of the reasons she received the award were given,


“The chamber distinguished citizen of the year, is given to an individual for outstanding dedication to serving the needs of our community. This years distinguished citizen is an educator in the Scioto County School System and has been for over 30 years,” Valentine said. “She is the high school vocal music teacher with the Washington-Nile School District.”


Valentine said the best way to describe Tieman, was the words she was nominated with.


“She is uniquely talented, excellent roll model and an outstanding teacher. As you know the honor of distinguished citizen goes beyond what one does in their day job. That’s where this individual rises to the task,” Valentine said. “In addition to the music awards with the school, she works with the Portsmouth Little Theater. She said donated her time and talents for fundraisers for SOMC’s Breast Cancer Compassion Fund.”


After Tieman was presented the award she expressed gratitude for the honor. As a part of the Award Tieman will throw out the first pitch at Portsmouth Day at Great American Ball Park with the Cincinnati Reds.


Valentine said one program offered by the chambers that is designed to help build and enhance the community is Leadership Portsmouth.


According to a program description, “Leadership Portsmouth is a community educational program established in 1990 to help build and enhance the community of Portsmouth by developing the talents, tapping the energies, and harnessing the resources of our region’s present and future leaders. Leadership Portsmouth recognizes that the economic health of our community is linked to the vitality of Portsmouth and to the opportunities afforded all its citizens. Leadership enables and helps forge new collaborative efforts that have a lasting and positive impact on their personal and professional lives and on our community.”


During the program the members of the Leadership Portsmouth Class of 2014 were recognized and presented plaques.


Valentine said members of the Leadership Portsmouth Class of 2015 are being actively recruited.


“Since its inception in 1992, the program has graduated over 300 leaders in our community,” Valentine said,

Also during the breakfast meeting the community was provided updates from Infra-Metals of New Boston and Sole Choice of Portsmouth.
