A Greenfield woman was arrested in Illinois this week following allegations of attempting to pass counterfeit $100 bills and possession of drugs.

According to WXEF in Effingham, Ill., Effingham police officers responded Tuesday after a report of two suspects trying to pass bogus bills at a convenience store. Arrested were Lindsey N. Whaley, 22, of Greenfield, and 39-year-old Eric J. McCullom, of Columbus.

According to WXEF, Effingham police had previously received a message from Vandalia, Ill. authorities that someone was believed to be in the area passing counterfeit $100 bills.

Since the arrest of Whaley and McCullom, federal authorities have joined the investigation, WXEF reported.

In addition, Altamont, Ill. police have charged Whaley with forgery, WXEF reported, for allegedly trying to pass a bogus $100 bill at a local Subway Restaurant there on Tuesday.

The Effingham Police Department told WXEF that U.S. Secret Service officials were in Effingham on Wednesday, working with local officials to determine who is printing the bogus bills. The department said it expects the investigation will lead to the filing of federal charges through the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Whaley and McCullom also face some additional charges: McCullom for possession of cannabis; and Whaley for possession of a controlled substance, possession of hypodermic needles, and possession of cannabis.

Whaley has a May 1 pretrial scheduled in Fayette County on a charge of possession of drug instruments. She was released on a $750 OR bond there on March 13. Fayette County Municipal records show a New Holland address for Whaley. An Effingham Police Department spokesperson told The Times-Gazette on Thursday that it actually has two addresses for Whaley, but that Greenfield is official arrest record address. The spokesperson said that address came from Whaley’s driver’s license.

Whaley and McCullom are currently in custody at the Effingham County jail.
