The Princeton Review released its annual ‘Top 25 Undergraduate Schools to Study Game Design for 2014’, this week and Shawnee State University (SSU) was ranked 11th.

According to SSU, ‘the list was based on a survey conducted in Fall 2013 of 150 programs at institutions offering video game design coursework and degrees in the United States, Canada, and some countries abroad.”

Dr. Rita Rice Morris, SSU President said, “in the course of completing the survey, we were asked to provide information about our academic offerings, faculty credentials, facilities and technology, and graduates’ employment and professional achievements.’

Shawnee State University offers two separate yet integrated majors spanning two separate university colleges – a bachelor of science degree for students focused in the area of computer science engineering and a bachelor of fine arts degree for students focused on art and game design.

This is the fourth year SSU made the list. SSU was ranked seventh on the 2013 list.

“Working in a group is a valuable skill,” said Jason Witherell, Faculty in the SSU Engineering Technologies Department, in a released statement. “Rarely is a game made by just one person. We give students ‘real life’ experience by teaching them how to work collaboratively on a project between our two programs.”

The 2014 list includes, the University of Southern California, University of Utah, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Michigan State University and many others. SSU was the only school in Ohio to make the list.

“We’re in excellent company on the list – with some very large universities,” said Greg Lyons, Chair of the Fine Arts Department, in a released statement. “One of our strengths is our size. Our students get personal one-on-one attention with professors who have experience in the industry. The student experience is very personalized.”
