It’s time to dust off the hardwood and get fired up! The annual Hardwood Heroes Celebrity Basketball Game will be held on March 29 at 1 p.m. at Shawnee State University’s Athletic Complex. The event is a fundraiser for the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ (SCBDD) Special Olympics.
“We are really excited this year,” said Shawn Jordan, Awareness Coordinator at SCBDD and coordinator for this year’s event. “This event is a great way for people to see our Special Olympians in action and to learn more about the programs and services available at SCBDD.”
This year’s theme, ‘Let’s Get Fired Up!’ has everyone on fire with excitement for the event.
“I had the privilege to work with an amazing photographer, Andrew Dodson, who worked with me to shoot promo pictures of four players and two cheerleaders. He then used his magic to add flames to the shots. We use these pictures on social media, out in front of our building in life-size shots and in promotional flyers and posters to gain an audience for the game. The players and cheerleaders then get to keep the pictures of themselves once the game is over,” she said.
Jordan said the event is a great way to learn more about the programs and services
through various booths that will be on display during the game. Department representatives are working together to set up displays and offer information.
“For the past three years, we have utilized the mezzanine in the athletic complex to share information. Staff members from all of our departments are on hand to answer questions, pass out brochures on the various services and provide resources. It has been a very positive piece to the event,” she explained.
Jordan said celebrities are still confirming participation, but a full list will be released in mid-March.
“We have always had participation from all over Scioto County. And each year, we gain more interest from local celebrities to be a part of this program. We have a great list and will announce all celebrities as soon as confirmations are all in,” she said.
Along with the game will be various prizes given, a 50-50 drawing, a half-time free-throw shooting contest, entertainment and more! The cost of admission is $2. T-shirts will also be for sale at a cost of $10 each.
