President Barack Obama has announced his intent to nominate former Ohio governor and Scioto County native Ted Strickland to be Alternate Representative of the United States to the 68th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Strickland is co-founder and chairman of Midwest Gateway Partners, a position he has held since 2011. He served the Sixth District of Ohio, including Scioto County in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993-1995 and 1997-2007, before defeating Ken Blackwell to become Governor of Ohio. Strickland subsequently lost his bid to remain in Columbus to current governor John Kasich.

Born in Lucasville, Strickland was one of nine children; his father was a steelworker. A 1959 graduate of Northwest High School, that school’s first graduating class, Strickland went on to be the first member of his family to attend college. Strickland was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in psychology from Asbury College in 1963. In 1966, he received a Master of Arts degree in guidance counseling from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Divinity from the Asbury Theological Seminary in 1967. He then returned to the University of Kentucky to earn his Ph.D in counseling psychology in 1980. He is married to Frances Strickland, an educational psychologist and author of a widely used screening test for kindergarten-age children.

From 1983 to 2004, he practiced psychology. He also served in a number of capacities at the Methodist Children’s Home of Kentucky, Shawnee State University and Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.

In January, Strickland made it official that he would not seek his old seat back by challenging Kasich.

Strickland was one of the president’s picks for key administration posts announced Wednesday.

“I am honored that these talented individuals have decided to join this Administration and serve our country,” Obama said. “I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.”
