Shawnee State University’s Theatre Department presents Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Shawnee State University’s Theatre Department presents George and Ira Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing at 7:30 p.m. from Oct. 26-29 in the Eloise Covert Smith Theater at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Of Thee I Sing is a satirical musical about a presidential candidate, John P. Wintergreen, who runs in the platform of “love.” Wintergreen’s advisors plan to hold a beauty pageant wherein Wintergreen will fall in love and marry the winner; however, Wintergreen falls in love with the woman running the pageant, Mary Turner.

Through Turner’s delicious corn muffins, she is able to convince both the pageant judges and the justices of the Supreme Court that she is the right woman for Wintergreen. Trouble brews as Diana Devereaux, winner of the pageant, refuses to accept losing her chance at becoming the First Lady and starts an international incident that threatens to create a war with France.

Of Thee I Sing is the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
