The Scioto Foundation will sponsor a UCAN Go to College Carnival from 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10 at the SOMC Friends Center in Portsmouth. Offering games, giveaways, prizes, a raffle and fun, the carnival is planned for children grades K – 3 and their parents, grandparents and guardians. Admission to the carnival is free.
Designed with a “learning stations” format, the program will feature entertaining, age-appropriate activities with a subtle focus on “going to college.” Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The UCAN College Carnival is part of the Scioto Foundation’s effort to create a “college-going community that embraces and accepts the need for post-secondary education,” said SF Executive Director Kim Cutlip. “It is important to begin early to get our young people excited about going to college.”
Activity stations will be based on themes such as college saving, career awareness, Shawnee State University and other nearby colleges, good citizens, reading and information for parents. Typical children’s games like a token hunt, bean bag toss, a ring toss, ducky pond, and others will give youngsters opportunities to win prizes and have fun.
Hands-on activities and exercises will also be conducted by Southern Ohio Medical Center, Ohio State University Extension, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Portsmouth Public Library.
A raffle of five $50 start-ups or registration fees for the Ohio College Advantage savings plans will take place throughout the event.
