Jenny Lavender, Children’s Activities Chair, is proud to announce the upcoming children’s activities that have been coordinated for this year’s River Days celebration. Children’s Activities will be underway at York Park (located behind the Portsmouth floodwall on the river) on Sunday, September 5, from the hours of 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Highlights of this particular event include: RiverWorks Discovery, an educational and fun hands-on, river-based curriculum that is designed to familiarize children and families with all aspects of American’s waterways will kick off the event at 10 a.m. Also at 10 a.m., kids will have the opportunity to decorate a cookie to their liking with an assortment of edible treats! At 11 a.m. “Wellington the Wellness Hound” Southern Ohio Medical Center’s new mascot for children’s health will be visiting the children as they enjoy the morning’s activities. At 11:30 a.m. the children’s sack races will be underway in York Park, with trophies being given to first, second and third place winners. From Noon – 2 p.m. a children’s face painting artist will be in the park that will create amazing faces beyond your belief! Ahoy me Mateys, from 1 - 2 p.m. it’s “How to be a Pirate” instructed by the “Plunderin’ Pirate” himself! So be sure and join our crew while we learn, as well as plunder for treasure and treats! At 2:30 p.m. it’s Limbo. From 3 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., registration for the Tricycle Races will be underway, with racing beginning at 3:30 p.m. There will be four categories for the Tricycle Race, and they are as follows: Division I (under 3yrs.), Division II (3-4yrs.), Division III (5-6yrs.), Division IV (7-8yrs.) Prizes include 1st,2nd, and 3rd place trophies, with 1st place winner in all divisions receiving a Radio Flyer Tricycle too. Other exciting activities available from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. include: Sidewalk Chalk Art, Ring Toss, Sand Art, Creative Waffle Concoctions, Children’s Tattoos, Coloring and Drawing, Bubble Blowing, the delicious Edible Wands, Beaded Necklaces and Bracelets, Design Your Own Flying Disk, Balloon Plants, Scratch Art, and brought back by popular demand to this year’s event…fun inflatables! Inflatables include a 22 foot Giant Climb and Slide, Bouncer/Climber/Basketball game and Obstacle Course. No tickets needed for these, as the fun here is absolutely free! On top of all of this the park offers fun playground equipment for the children to enjoy as well. Children’s Activities for River Days is sponsored by – Kiwanis of Portsmouth.
