Shawnee State University held its annual athletics Hall of Fame Banquet in the Sodexo Ballroom on Friday, Jan. 31, during Homecoming Weekend hosting a variety of prominent community members, athletes and students.
However, the most prominent attendees were this year’s three new Hall of Fame members — volleyball player Rebecca Day Greene and cross country players Lisa Davies Culbertson and Star Emmert Sawicki.
Bill Rockwell was this year’s recipient of the Ralph Kavanaugh Home Team Award. Instrumental in starting the Bear Club, the official booster club of SSU Athletics, Rockwell is an avid supporter of all 13 SSU varsity athletic teams and is employed as the Director of Student Housing and the University Center.
“It’s not the coaches that win,” Rockwell said, setting the stage for the rest of the event. “They develop winners.”
The first inductee, Rebecca (Day) Greene, was the first volleyball player inducted into the Hall of Fame. She was the 2008 NAIA Honorable Mention all-American, the first in program history. A three-time team captain, she led the team to a 38-3 season in 2008, the best winning percentage in program history, and graduated as the school record holder in six different categories.
Lisa (Davies) Culbertson along with Star (Emmert) Sawicki were the first cross country runners inducted into the Hall of Fame. Introduced by Coach Eric Putnam, their acceptance speeches focused on the camaraderie the two shared practicing, running meets and breaking records together.
Culbertson, a three-time NAIA Qualifier and two-time NAIA All-American, still holds 11 of the top 25 cross country times in program history. She won six cross country meets as an individual — the most in program history — and was a member of the 2008 team that placed a program-best 13th at the NAIA Championship.
Sawicki was the first four-time NAIA Qualifier in history and became a two-time All-American, holding seven of the top 25 cross country times in program history. Additionally, she won two cross country meets as an individual and, along with Culbertson, was a member of the 2008 team that placed 13th at the NAIA Championship.
