In 2013, the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities (SCBDD) took input from community and key stakeholders and revamped processes to create a more streamlined approach to providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities.
“We were already a very focused organization,” said Shawn Jordan, Awareness Coordinator for SCBDD, “but it was important to us to listen to the feedback we had gathered from our key stakeholders and put a plan into place that would not only keep us focused in the same direction, but would also share with the community all of the things we are doing to get there.”
The process began with a revamped mission, vision and values that would align the organization’s goals to positive outcomes. That then lead to a new look and feel for the organization through branding. “We began looking at making a change in our look and logo about a year ago,” said Jordan. “Through some of our café conversation focus groups, we learned that we weren’t always recognizable in our efforts to provide information. So, we began working toward making who we are, stand out in the community.”
Jordan said focus groups were held with local business leaders, families, community members and providers to seek feedback on everything from color to appearance.
“We learned a lot through this process. Especially with colors and how colors trigger certain emotions. It really gave us all a new perspective of how we should portray what we do through brand recognition,” Jordan explained.
From there, the organization brought in an outside group that focuses on quality outcomes, to take a look at the processes already in place to provide services. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) provides feedback on organizational excellence and sets an organization apart for providers and individuals seeking quality in their choice of services.
SCBDD was granted a three-year accreditation for Employment Supports, Job Development and Transition Services. SCBDD has implemented an on-going quality assurance process to maintain and exceed CARF’s standards for all programs and will seek accreditation for more programing over the next few years.
“This achievement is an indication of your organization’s dedication and commitment to improving the quality of the lives of the persons served. Services, personnel and documentation clearly indicate an established patter of practice excellence,” said Brian Boon, president and CEO of CARF International.
The SCBDD was also recognized, statewide and locally, for achievements through the Ohio Public Images Network, Appalachian Microenterprise and the Reader’s Choice.
“We have such a talented workforce and such dedicated individuals at Scioto County DD,” Jordan said. “And we are honored with all of the recognition we have received over the last year.”
Jordan said the organization received second place, for the second year in a row, in the Portsmouth Daily Times Reader’s Choice Awards in the Best Employer category.
“What an honor to be known throughout the region as a great place to work, by people who see first hand how wonderful our staff and board are,” she said.
The organization was also recognized for employment and training of individuals with disabilities by the Griffin-Hammis Associates Appalachia Microenterprise Award and was recognized for efforts to create positive awareness of persons with developmental disabilities through two Ohio Public Images Awards.
“We have a great organization with a great vision for the future,” said Jordan. “We focus on individuals abilities and help them to live meaningful lives. We are grateful to give back to our community through education, volunteerism and support.”
