Ottney promoted to content manager

February 6, 2014

Veteran reporter Ryan Ottney has been promoted to the position of content manager at the Portsmouth (Ohio) Daily Times, effective immediately.

The announcement was made Wednesday, Jan. 15, by Jim Lawitz, director of content for Civitas Media, the Daily Times’ parent company.

A lifetime resident of the local New Boston community, Ottney has a BA in English communications from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio. He first started working at the Daily Times in 2000, and returned as a staff writer in 2006. Since that time, Ottney has covered the New Boston area, education news, local arts, and general news.

“I have enjoyed getting to know this community, and sharing its many wonderful stories,” Ottney said.

As a writer, Ottney has also received many awards for his reporting, including Second Place in The Associated Press Media Editors Award, and the Ohio School Boards Association Media Honor Roll.

“Ryan’s deep roots in the community and strong journalistic talents make him the right person for this role,” Lawitz said.

With this announcement, Ottney assumes the content manager’s position from Bob Strickley, whom was promoted within the company to the top editorial position in Alton, Ill. In his new role, Ottney will oversee the general newsroom operation and story assignments, with a strong focus on local news content and digital publishing.

“I am looking forward to this new opportunity with the Daily Times, and I am excited to continue our news focus on local content as we move to more online media,” Ottney said. “I have been fortunate to work, and learn, from many excellent editors during my years with the Times, and I am even more proud to be working alongside our current newsroom of talented writers.”

Ottney lives in New Boston with his wife, Katie, and their son, Chase.
