Portsmouth Mayor David Malone proclaimed Thursday, Sept. 19, as “Drive 4 Pledges Day,” in recognition of the AT&T “It Can Wait campaign.”
Malone gave the proclamation to Mark Romito, Director of External Affairs for AT&T Thursday. Malone said he is glad to be a part of the national effort regarding the importance of safe driving.
“It is a promotion to encourage people not to text and drive, which is just as important as not drinking and driving. We are just partnering with AT&T to encourage our communities to foster safe driving,” Malone said.
Romito said promoting no texting while driving is a critical issue which is worthy of addressing.
“I am here on behalf of AT&T to promote the idea of no texting and driving. Today, nationally, is our “Drive 4 Pledges Day.” As a part of that we encouraging everyone to take a pledge not to text and drive and to be safe. Annually, there is over 100,000 car accidents due to texting while driving, and many of those are life-changing,” Romito said.
Romito said AT&T is glad the It Can Wait campaign has expanded to include three other nationwide wireless carriers.
“We started this program, and we are very proud of that fact. Now I am happy to report that the program has expanded, and now the other nationwide carriers, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have joined with us on the It Can Wait campaign,” Romito said.
Romito said he urges people to visit itcanwait.com to view the video and sign the pledge.
“Itcanwait.com is a great resource for a lot of things. We have a new video that tells some of the stories. It is really impactful,” Romito said.
Romito said research reveals texting while driving increases the likelihood of being involved in an accident.
“There is study that says that if you text and drive, you are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident. We just want people to be safe out there,” Romito said.
Romito said AT&T priotizes safety above the use of their products and services.
“We love the fact that customers use our products and services, but we want them to be safe when they use them and we want them to be our customers for a long time,” Romito said.
