MASON COUNTY — This year’s Mason County Relay for Life is fast approaching and one of the county’s major Relay teams has been busy raising funds for this year’s event which starts at 6 p.m., Sept. 21 at Point Pleasant High School, registration is at 5 p.m.
Charlie’s Angels, a group of committed volunteers in the fight against cancer, raised an amazing $10,187.58 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life earlier this summer with its annual golf tournament. In addition, the tournament helped raise $10,187.58 for the Angela “Charlie” Lilly Memorial Scholarship Fund which, once endowed, will be used to award an annual scholarship to a Mason County graduating senior pursuing a career in education - just as Charlie did.
Charlie, who died of breast cancer, left behind a legacy in her family and friends who continue to raises funds to battle cancer and now help young people with their education.
Again, the annual golf tournament held at Riverside Golf Course in Mason, is the group’s major fundraiser and this year’s Honorary Starter was David Bragg, a colon cancer survivor.
Other winners of the tournament included: The “AM” winners with first place team Mario Liberatore, Olin Rice, Pat Harbour and Jim Gress. Second place team Chris Johnson, Jonathan Dillon, Heath Rickard and Jay Harris. Third place went to the Chad Foreman team; fourth place to the Brian Stepp team; fifth place to the Mark Georgi team; also placing was the team of Brenda Nolan, Drake Nolan, Rachel Nolan. Prize cash drawing winner was Jim Wilson. Putting contest winner was Ron Hudson.
The “PM” winners were: First place team, Sterling Shields, Justin Arnold, Matt Arnold, Curt Grimm. Second place team, Kyle Hudson, Ryan Hudson, Matt Wiseman, Justin Miller. Third place team, Tony Young, Randy Tolliver, Bill Ellis, Luther Young. Fourth place team, Steven Deshuk, Bob Stover, Vic Stover, Joe Ashworth. Fifth place team, Dave Bodkin, Diana Bodkin, Bob Humphrey, Helen Humphrey. Also placing, Steve Lyons, Charlie Rickard, Damon Gibbs, Dye. The cash prize drawing winner was Nathan Roberts. Putting contest winner was Kyle Hudson. Other prize drawing winners were Tom Johnson, Russ Stewart. Silent auction winner was Trent Roush.
Wendy Lilly, sister of Charlie, has said the tournament couldn’t happen without the help of volunteers and community members who participate on so many levels.
